Overture modwheel tutorial

Overture Modwheel tutorial by Pete Casti 2004

Note, drop down menus are missing in pictures because my software will not capture them. It would also probably be best if you use the back arrow in your web browser.

1. Ok here are the different ways to use the mod wheel. The most important way is in the graphics window. So lets open up overture and follow along. Now that you have overture open, go ahead and write some quick music as a sample for us to work with. To get to the graphics window go to the top of the page where it says "Window". Left click on "Window" to produce a drop down menu. Now Left click on Graphic window. This first screen should have the piano roll view and show "Velocity" in the window next to the tool area. Left click on the down arrow next to "Velocity" to produce an other drop down menu. Here we can choose Velocity, Pitch Bend, Channel Aft, Control Change, Tempo and Program change. Select "Control Change" because the mod wheel is a control. Now there should be a 0 next to "Control Change". Use the drop down arrow next to the 0 to select "Modulation". Here at the bottom of the screen, where it has numbers from 0 through 127, we can use one of two tools to draw with. To hand draw the mod wheel input measure by measure, left click on the pencil Icon next to the arrow and you can draw free hand lines. Click on the angled line next to the pencil and you can draw straight lines. The way that the numbers relate to the mod wheel are as follows:

0 is mod wheel down

64 is mod wheel center

127 is mod wheel up.

It's just that easy. If you want to draw the mod wheel on different staffs you can use the drop down arrow at the far right hand side in the Graphics window to select which staff / track you want to work with. You can also edit midi information of each voice in a track by clicking on the voice option at the bottom of the screen and changing to the desired voice number..

2. The next way that mod wheel can be entered is through the Dynamic markings such as P, mp, mf, etc...... In your original score, go to the top of the page and roll your mouse over the different options in the tool bar until you find the one that says "Dynamics". Now left click and hold then roll the mouse over the dynamic you want. Once you are over the dynamic let go of the left click. That dynamic that you chose should be displayed in the dynamic tool bar. Left click in your piece where you would like to see this dynamic. Now that it is in your piece you can go back to the tool bar and select the pointer tool, the arrow next to the circle with the cross hatch. Once you have the selector tool double left click the dynamic you want to change in your piece. Here you have different options of what you want this dynamic to control. If you click modulation (CC1) you can set the mod wheel value for this dynamic. Be aware that if you hand draw mod wheel values in the graphics window they will over ride the dynamic markings that you set to modulation. Also make sure to check the box that says play.

3 This is how you record Mod wheel events in live recording.

First you must have a keyboard with a mod wheel hooked up to your computer. Be sure that the keyboard is sending midi info to overture. Let us set up overture to record all midi data. At the top of the screen left click on "Options". Roll the mouse down to Record Options... Now where it says "Record", check the box next to it that says "All". If you want you can click on "Only" then check the box of each control that you want to record. Now that you have the record option set up go back to your piece and click on the staff that you want to record your live playing to. Once you have selected the staff you may click on record. It will usually give you a one-measure count off then start recording. Go ahead and start playing. Use the mod wheel as you go. Once you are done, stop the recording and go back to the graphics window. In the graphics window remember to go to the drop down and select control change, then modulation from the next arrow over. You should now be able to see all of your mod wheel inputs drawn out. You can edit them by hand now if you want.
